Frances Fisher plays a woman who gains insight into her family and herself in "The Rising Place" (2002). Virginia Wilder (Fisher) goes home for the holidays to visit her mother (Frances Sternhagen) and her Aunt Millie, (Alice Drummond) who is ill. While she is there, Virginia finds a box of her aunt's letters and photographs that reveal the old woman's life in Mississippi during World War II. Laurel Holloman plays Millie as a young innocent, dealing with a wartime romance and confronting social injusticeand racism for the first time. Tom Rice makes his debut as the writer and director of the film, which features Tess Harper, Gary Cole and Jennifer Holliday who also wrote and performs all the songs.
