It might seem goofy today, but "Rocketship X-M," from 1950, was the first significant science-fiction movie to be made after WWII, and it foreshadowed the sci-fi boom of the '50s with its overtones of nuclear war and planets full of mutants. Lloyd Bridges plays the skipper of a space expedition that sets out for the moon, but is "blown off course" and winds up on Mars. "Rocketship X-M" is an atmospheric, effective sci-fi cheapie that grossed over a million dollars in its day.
