Based on true events, "Salt of the Earth" (1954) is the harrowing story of a group of Mexican American miners who strike in protest of brutal mining and living conditions in New Mexico. After violent clashes leave the workers beaten and defenseless, their wives and mothers rally the cause in a bid for justice. Will Geer of "The Waltons" fame is one of the few professional actors in the cast; the filmmakers employed mostly non-professionals who were a part of the real-life strike that inspired the film. The director, writer, producer and composer were all Blacklist era victims, and the film itself was banned for its jarring political content.
