In her first starring role actress Susan Hayward earned an Academy Award nomination for her moving performance as a woman in the grip of addiction. Hayward plays a singer who abandons her promising stage career after she falls for a fellow up-and-comer played by Lee Bowman. Initially determined to be the model wife and mother, Hayward gradually succumbs to boredom, depression and the bottle while her husband's career as a crooner skyrockets. Hayward's descent into despair and her struggle to climb back from the abyss make for a riveting experience in this melodrama co-written by the renowned Dorothy Parker, whose script was also nominated for an Oscar.
