After the members of a Chicago jazz band lose their saxophonist to an untimely death, they see their future as performers jeopardized by the appearance of a troublesome New Orleans pianist designated as the late musician's next of kin. While trying to put together a worthy funeral for their departed colleague, the ghetto-raised artists also fight to establish themselves as professionals.
