A stranger's visit and the burgeoning civil rights movement unsettle an African-American Chicago family in this enthralling 1950s era drama, part of the Broadway Theatre Archive. Elderly widow Maidie Norman lives with her spinster daughter Mary Alice in ahousehold where Norman's gambler brother Scatman Crothers is also a fixture. When blind stranger Richard Ward knocks on their door, the family invites him leading to sexual revelations for Alice and consternation for Norman. The matriarch is further disturbed when she visits Montgomery, Alabama and witnesses first hand the growing push for equal rights. Ivan Dixon directs Phillip Hayes Dean's play.
