The smell of greed. Never in the history of cinema has greed and corruption been so viscerally presented; now, with this Criterion Collection Blu-ray edition of "Sweet Smell of Success" (1957), Alexander Mackendrick's brutal look at the underbelly of Broadway has never been better. Tony Curtis shines as an opportunistic press agent who clashes in a power struggle with Burt Lancaster who plays an all-powerful, totally corrupt newspaper columnist. The two clash menacingly in the midst of a stylish Manhattan nightclub, as reputations are bought and sold and Curtis' whole life hangs in the balance. This masterpiece of film noir is a spectacular example of the genre.
