Juxtaposing scenes of The Rolling Stones recording their seminal composition from which the film derives its name, with fictitious scenes created by the director, Jean-Luc Godard's film serves as both rock documentary and an examination of the Cultural Revolution from the vantage point of the late-1960s. For one half of the film, Godard follows the Stones in the recording studio as the band gradually shapes and finalizes "Sympathy for the Devil" in the wake of the Kennedy assassinations and band mate Brian Jones' creative self-destruction. The remainder of the project is comprised of several improvised and surreal explorations of everything from the Black Panther movement, the media, pulp fiction, pornography and Marxism, as Godard contemplates the world at large and urges an intellectual revolution.
