Clocking in at under half an hour, the "condensed" 1911 adaptation of Charles Dickens' classic "A Tale of Two Cities" still manages to effectively dramatize the French Revolution-era story of lawyer Sydney Carton (Maurice Costello), defender of falsely accused spy Charles Darnay (Leo Delaney), and Lucie Manette (Florence Turner), the woman both men love. Next, the 1917 "A Tale of Two Cities" (1917) burst to feature length, and took the unusual step of casting lead actor William Farnum as both attorney Carton and client Darnay─both still campaigning for the heart of Lucie (Jewel Carmen). With Charles Clary, Herschel Mayall. 97 min. total. Standard; Soundtrack: music score. Silent with music score.
