Description
This TCM Greatest Classic Films Set includes these four great films:

Blackboard Jungle (1955)
- Racial and sexual tensions. Violence. Gangs. Apathy. Hot-button issues in schools today were tackled in Blackboard Jungle, with Glenn Ford as an idealistic inner-city teacher and Sidney Poitier, in a star-making performance, as a teen misfit.

Edge of the City (1957) - Two laborers (Poitier and John Cassavetes) face corruption on the New York waterfront and bond across society’s black/white divide in this directing debut by Martin Ritt (Sounder, Norma Rae). The powerful cast includes Jack Warden and Ruby Dee.

Something of Value (1957) - In colonial Kenya, former childhood playmates Peter (Rock Hudson) and Kimani (Poitier) have maintained a deep, if unlikely, friendship. But with the bloody Mau Mau uprising, the men discover that even the strongest bond may not be stronger than the cry for freedom.

A Patch of Blue (1965) - Selina (Elizabeth Hartman) is blind and white. Helping her see the world anew is kindly Gordon Ralfe (Poitier), who is black, though Selina doesn’t know it. This impactful film won Shelly Winters an Oscar®* for her role as Selina’s bigoted, abusive mother.

        Comments about this product:

I hope Sidney Poitier is a better actor than TCM is at distribution. If they tell you 4 to 10 days for delivery and you're counting on that for a birthday gift. DON'T. This is the first and last time I buy movies from them.

It's exciting to see my young teenagers loving the classics and getting to know Katherine Hepburn and Sidney Poitier.

                Comments about this product:

Sydney Poitier was such a consummate actor and generous in that he made other actors only look good by comparison. Before other truly great black actors came along the likes of James Earl Jones, Morgan Freeman and Denzel Washington, Poitier spearheaded and laid the groundwork for those actors to eventually succeed him. He would be nominated for an Oscar for his riveting performance as a convict on the run chained to a bigot (Tony Curtis, also nominated) in "The Defiant Ones", eventually winning the best actor 1963 Oscar for his humorous and poignant portrayal of a freelance handyman conned into building a chapel for a group of immigrant nuns in "The Lilies of the Field" but it's Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer that really helped launch his career with his star turn in 1955's "The Blackboard Jungle". Of the four other films in this collection, perhaps the best of these is Poitier's performance in "A Patch of Blue" which broke new ground and was among the first films to explore interracial relationships in the sixties. By all accounts an outstanding collection of films.
