Charlton Heston portrays the talented painter Michelangelo in the artful biography "The Agony and the Ecstasy" (1965). The film chronicles his life from age 13 to his death at 88; however it primarily focuses on the five years Michelangelo was commissioned to create the infamous Sistine Chapel for Pope Julius II (Rex Harrison). Set against a time period of religious and political upheaval, Michelangelo and Pope Julius were at odds, the latter bullying the volatile painter in this battle of wills.
Virtually forced to do the job by Julius, he later destroys his own work and flees to Rome. Eventually resumed, the project becomes a battle of wills fueled by artistic and temperamental differences that form the core of this movie.
