This ground breaking made-for-TV movie depicts the struggles of African-Americans for equality from the time of the Civil War through the Civil Rights movement as seen through the eyes of one woman. Cicely Tyson gives an amazing performance as Miss Jane Pittman, a black woman born in the South near the end of the Civil War. As Miss Pittman recalls the major events of her life, we see the hard-fought journey that took African-Americans in the U.S. from slavery to freedom on the road to equality.
