Released in 1953, "The Band Wagon" is a splashy, bigger-than-life musical that plays slyly on the Hollywood world of outsized egos and fading fortunes. Fred Astaire plays an aging hoofer desperate to jump-start his career when he gets on board with a Broadway musical; unfortunately, that musical is helmed by a pretentious director with grandiose plans. Directed by Vincente Minelli in his typically flamboyant Technicolor style, "The Band Wagon" is funny and tongue-in-cheek, with some great songs and great dancing. This 2-disc special edition includes a new making-of documentary along with a vintage one as well as an outtake musical number and a trailer gallery.
