The friendship between screen legends James Stewart and Henry Fonda dated back to their days as roommates and struggling actors. Things had certainly changed by the time they made these two films! Gene Kelly produced "The Cheyenne Social Club" (1970) in which the two now-superstars play a couple of cowboys defending a house of ill repute from a gang. Then the friends are at odds in "Firecreek" (1968) as Stewart's inexperienced lawman tries to catch Fonda's wily outlaw.

    Comments about this product:

I purchased this dual set just for "The Cheyenne Social Club". It is a western, yet a comedy.

A letter finally finds James Stewart; his brother left him a business in Cheyenne, WY. So, his partner, Henry Fonda, trails along to find this lawyer and his inheritance.

The lawyer tells him, his dead brother left him the best social club in the territory. As he walks about town, he is celebrated by other business owners giving him free dinners and drinks to him and his partner. Such a welcome from the town!

He checks into his business for lodging. What a glorious welcome by the most gorgeous women ever they have seen. They escort him and partner to the Master Bedroom. Tomorrow, Stewart discovers that this social club is really a "house of ill repute" on the upper-crust scale. He is horrified. Meanwhile, Fonda is getting to know to the women on better terms.

Shirley Jones is the lead madam in this establishment. She gets very badly beaten up by a customer. Stewart is very upset. Plus, a gang of men are out to kill this social club because they refused service because they were not bathed. Protect these women against thugs.

I invite you to watch the ending. Gun fighting from cowhands is not the best recommendation for dealing with ugly men who know which end to shoot.

The other film, "Firecreek", is a good tale if you like tough westerns. Again. outlaws think sexual assault of women is their privilege. Even our current laws imply it by the sentence if imposed.
