Returning to the genre of dark, small-scale art films, Francis Ford Coppola's "The Conversation" (1974) became a critically acclaimed hit and the artistic high point of his career. In an atmosphere of paranoia and suspicion, Gene Hackman as the obsessive, loner antihero is hired to record the conversation of a young couple, played by Cindy Williams and Frederic Forrest, as they walk through San Francisco's Union Square. Simple enough - until Hackman suspects his employer's murderous motive. The suspenseful plot is thoroughly enhanced by the works of cinematographer Bill Butler and Oscar-nominated sound editor Walter Murch.
