Director Robert Wise turns a sci-fi film adaptation of Harry Bates' short story, "Farewell to the Master," into an examination of human nature and the soul of mankind in "The Day the Earth Stood Still" (1951). Michael Rennie, Patricia Neal, and Billy Gray play an alien, and the only two people on Earth who befriend rather than wish to fight him, realizing that he is likely the only thing that stands between the human race and total destruction.
