"The Devil and Daniel Webster" (1941) is a classic Faustian drama. James Craig stars as a struggling farmer who makes an off-the-cuff remark that he would sell his soul for a successful crop, only to have Lucifer overhear him and show up, offering to make a deal. Walter Huston plays the devil, who strikes a bargain with Craig for his soul. When the farmer realizes he has made a horrific mistake, he attempts to get out of his deal by recruiting lawyer extraordinaire Daniel Webster, played by Edward Arnold, to represent him in a trial that will decide the fate of his soul.
