"The Education of Sonny Carson" (1974) is a power film about overcoming violence and crime in the inner city. Based on Carson's autobiographical novel, the film traces the descent of a talented, black teen from honor student into a hardened criminal. Starring Rony Clanton, "The Education of Sonny Carson" explores Sonny's struggles to survive in the worst of Brooklyn's neighborhoods.  Initially an honor student in junior high, Sonny ends up in prison-but his life changes most dramatically upon his release, when he discovers that those closest to him before his imprisonment have become hooked on drugs.
