"The Guns of Navarone" (1961) debuts an all-star cast in this riveting war movie, based on the Alistair Maclean novel. Set in 1943, a special British task force is deployed to an Aegean island to disarm a round of Nazi cannons when their commanding officer, played by Anthony Quayle, becomes injured. This critical assignment must be completed under the watchful eye of the much inexperienced Mallory, played by Gregory Peck. A traitor emerges among them and the pressure to sabotage the guns of Navarone mounts. Nominated for seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay.
