Description
Director William A. “Wild Bill” Wellman tackled all manner of subjects during his legendary career: war (Battleground, Wings), Hollywood (1937’s A Star Is Born), exotic adventure (Beau Geste), crime (The Public Enemy) and, with The Happy Years, joyous, jim-dandy, turn-of-the-century Americana. Based on Owen Johnson’s The Lawrenceville School Stories, the film stars Dean Stockwell as Dink Stover, whose concerned papa sends him to the posh prep school in hopes of turning the troublemaker into a responsible young man. Fisticuffs, feuds and football test the lad’s mettle, but (of course) all comes right at the end. Deft and delightfully comic, The Happy Years happily evokes the charm and innocence of a lost era.

    Comments about this product:

This is welcome comedy to any family that has a problem child. Dean Stockwell is the boy monster! It takes place around 1890 to 1910. A long past culture, but nothing has changed about a boy's bad behavior today.

This is fun to watch all the past tricks he has done. Thank goodness his parents can afford to pay for the damages!! I would have laid a switch to his bottom, allowable in those days.

He is sent to Lawrenceville School, a posh boys boarding school. He meets boys more wily and uglier than him in tricks/bad behavior. It is the boys that teach him to how to behave and get along in this school.

His most harsh and most secretively nicest professor is the Latin teacher and he stresses the difference between verbs. Now, science and mathematics are stressed.

It took two years at this school, Dean is now a model student and after the younger brigands in fun to harass! His parents and two older siblings are pleased. A happy ending!

But you have to watch all the episodes of his antics. It is wild, both funny and ugly. The mischief is something to watch! I invite you and children to watch this nasty boy. It might be a teaching tool.
