Description
The Turner Classic Movies Vault Collection presents THE IRON PETTICOAT (1956) in a Two-Disc BluRay/DVD Combo for a Limited Edition run.

Bob Hope and Katharine Hepburn - two of Hollywood’s biggest stars – appear together for the first and only time in one of the most unlikely pairings in the history of movies. A charming Cold War romance and political satire in the tradition of Ninotchka (1939), this comic battle of the sexes pits a defecting Soviet jet pilot (Hepburn) against a U.S. army captain (Hope) who is charged with turning a diehard communist into a patriotic capitalist.

THE IRON PETTICOAT, has not been seen since 1966 and has been completely restored and remastered for this Blu-ray/DVD release.

      Comments about this product:

This was a Hope/Hepburn movie I hadn't ever seen. I had read that Hope had tried to exert too much control in the production. If he did, I didn't see it in final product. It really was Hope & Hepburn at their best.

I really want to talk to the quality to the Blu-Ray & DVD; It was amazing! I will definitely be buying more Blu-Rays from TCM. I was very impressed with the quality of the transfer!

If you are a Bob Hope fan, or especially a completist, you need this title.

If you are a Katharine Hepburn fan, or especially a completist, you need this title.

If you never even knew Bob Hope and Katharine Hepburn appeared together, you especially need this title.

Moviegoers almost forgot this title. And Bob Hope and Katharine Hepburn never got together again. What a shame. Because this film couldn't have worked without them both.

            Comments about this product:

The idea of Bob Hope and Kate Hepburn together was intriguing, but Hope "acts" with one-liners and Hepburn needed dialog. I like Hope as a comedian but he is not sophisticated enough to play opposite Hepburn. Her Russian accent was really bad and her fall from communist purity to adoring capitalist Hope was too phony.

                Comments about this product:

Any Hepburn fan should see it because of the history around this film. It is, however, awful in the chemistry and acting. I wouldn't waste money to buy it. There are too many brilliant films of hers to purchase first.

                Comments about this product:

This is a real curiosity, as the two stars are in roles suited to neither. It's impossible to know what it might have been had they used the original Ben Hecht script instead of letting Hope use his usual one-liners. Everyone who sees it comments on Hepburn's terrible Russian accent as a hot-shot pilot and Hope is even more unbelievable as an American pilot. But what I find most interesting about the blu-ray version is its exposure of the sets, which often display cheap painted flats and studio floors without any attempt to make them look like anything else. They didn't even bother to paint insignia's on the "Russian" airplanes that include an F-84 standing in as a MIG and a C-47 with a huge paper sheet with a red star covering its American insignia. Hepburn had just finished "Summertime," and so was available in England, but they must have paid the two stars and Hecht, who wanted his name taken off the picture, so much that they had nothing left for production. It's a truly bad movie, one of the worst the two stars ever made, but it's like watching a train wreck, you just can't take your eyes off it, hoping that everyone will be all right.
