The "Butcher of Shiloh" Colonel Marston (Robert Preston) is desperate to bring honor back to his name. His scheme is to lead a squad of new recruits up against a seemingly undefeatable army of Native Americans. Trapper Jed (Victor Mature) knows this is a suicide mission but he's torn, because since arriving at the Fort, he's developed feelings for Marston's wife (Anne Bancroft).
