Although I had seen this on TCM, I enjoyed it that much more, and am thrilled to include it in my movie collection! Betty Davis was a superb actress. I was intrigued with this movie cause it shows how some one money, control, and power. I will be watching this one again. Thank you! Sarah

      Comments about this product:

One of the best movies depicting family dysfunction. It is high drama set in the early 1900's in the American deep south, with scenes of horse drawn carriages, period archetecture, clothing and home decor. The characters are highly developed. The major female roles are the most interesting; one sadly fading southern belle and a mother and daughter exhibiting no signs of that persona. I saw no flaws.

This was an engaging, entertaining movie, with good performances by all the actors, many who played roguish characters in this story. But I thoroughly enjoyed this!

              Comments about this product:

This depiction of good vs evil is extrodinarily well done. The script was tested on stage, so polished. The cinematography was excellent. Herbert Masarshal and Bette Davis carrry their hard roles, backed by great supporting cast. Details of the turn of the century life in the Old South are revealing. Dan Durea yawns to perfection.
It is a movie I just had to have.

                Comments about this product:

Playwright Lillian Hellman's biographical story about her own family's greed and avarice, combined with the actor-centered skills of the most successful director of Hollywood, William Wyler, and with the First Lady of American Cinema, Bette Davis, performing the leading role, during her sizzling-hot acting career's prime years creates an alchemy that is spellbinding. Doubtless, this is Miss Davis' finest performance directed by William Wyler. Perhaps the best acting of her entire career.

Although producers and Wyler himself believed that moviegoers of the early 1940's weren't capable of appreciating Hellman's Regina Hubband Giddens ala Bette Davis, I believe they were dead wrong. In retrospect, Talullah Bankhead played the role on Broadway, full strength as Hellman scripted and was celebrated for her performance. Did Hollywood filmmakers really fear that moviegoers were somehow less well able to appreciate what Broadway audiences assuredly did? If so, why so?

Miss Davis was adamant about playing her character as Hellman had intended and went to the matt with Wyler (whom she adored) and producers (whom she tolerated when necessary). Regardless, Miss Davis plays the leading role of Regina as Wyler wants . . . as she always did. Still, she registered objections to Hellman's character being tamed down for moviegoers.

Using only her eyes, hardly moving another notceable muscle, someone Miss Davis conveys a mixture of strong emotions in the most important scenes. It is truly remarkable to watch Bette Davis "do without doing." No one could do that better than she. Breath-taking for lovers of great acting.
