Description
It began on October 2, 1918, when the men of the U.S. Army's 77th Division, 308th Battalion were surrounded by German troops in the Argonne Forest. Without food, water or reserve ammunition, cut off from supply and communication lines, and subjected to constant assaults and bombardments, they managed to hold off the enemy until they were finally rescued after five days of desperate action. This A&E Original Movie brings their harrowing ordeal to life. Directed by Russell Mulcahy (Ricochet, Highlander), THE LOST BATTALION stars Rick Schroder (NYPD Blue, Crimson Tide) as Major Charles Whittlesey, the civilian-turned-soldier who won the Congressional Medal of Honor for keeping his outnumbered troops alive and fighting in the face of seemingly insurmountable odds.

There is minimal foul language and I am always looking for good movies w/o foul language. The foul language does not enhance the movie in any way. There is some graphic but you can't have war w/o blood. Great movie and great story line.

        Comments about this product:

This is an excellent film about a truly heroic event during the First World War. Solid performances by the entire cast, with very high production values (Filmed in Luxembourg) serve to enhance a well written script. Based on the true story of nine companies of the U.S. 77 Infantry Division who were cut-off and surrounded by German Forces in the Argonne Forest of France during the Meuse-Argonne Offensive in October of 1918.

        Comments about this product:

I watch History Channel programs a lot - especially military/war history programs. I very much appreciated the accuracy. Factually, it was modeled 90% after the actual story of the battalion. That is saying a lot if you know enough to be able to compare and contrast facts with the crud Hollywood puts out normally. The quotes were even 100% accurate. The only grind I have with the movie is based on its execution. The viewer is led to believe that there was basically a platoon sized element. The actual battalion consisted of over 500 men. While the movie had some good scenes and dialogue (quotes from the actual battle)it was very lackluster otherwise. Some of the dialogue was almost laughable. It certainly didn't seem like they had a military advisor on hand to add the necesssary adjustments while filming. The effects were on par with a low-budget film for the most part. But it seems that they went overboard with the budget for a few CGI scenes (flame thrower scene, some explosions, ect.) when the overall film could have used an overall bump up. With that said, I would recommend the movie to people interested in the history. It gets 5/5 for historical accuracy. The acting was maybe 2/5. The cinematography was 3/5 at best. The fighting scenes relied heavily on what I call the "shaky camera shot to cover up my low budget fight scene" effect.
Basically, it is a great movie if you like historically accurate movies. It will be a disappointment if you are watching for high-quality acting, emotional engagement, cinematography, etc. I'll put it this way. I was interested because it was factual, but I would feel bad making my girlfriend watch it with me.

          Comments about this product:

I got the chance to see this movie in my United States History class in high school earlier this year. Being a history movie, I was at first sceptical, but this is acually a great movie. It is very historically accurate, while at the same time very entertaining. I would absolutely say that if you get the chance, watch this movie.

          Lost Battalion

          Comments about this product:

          Hello,
I'm Lt. Leak's Grandaughter. As a family member, I can tell you that this movie is extremely accurate. We are very, very pleased that A&E choose to make this film. This movie shows the very horrible costs of war and the extreme difficulties faced by the Lost Battalion, which was neither "lost" nor a "battalion".

The perseverance of these brave men ended the "War to End All Wars", after 4 million dead. Thank you too to A&E for making a move about WWI, which many refer to as "The Forgotten War". All Americans need to know the history of what these men fought for and accomplished.
          Warmest Regards.

          Comments about this product:

Rick Schroder did an excellent job portraying all aspects of combat. He exemplified the best traits of a leader; caring for his men, leading by example, and standing up to the consequences of his actions be they good or bad.
An excellent movie to teach leadership.
