His fangs are bared, his hackles raised, his gin bottle nearly empty. The Male Animal is out of his lair, storming battle-of-the-sexes-bulwarks, skewering college athletics and speaking his mind when folks of narrower hat size seek to stop him. Henry Fonda plays bookish Prof. Tommy Turner, struggling to get in touch with his man-of-action side during the weekend of the big football game, the arrival of an ex-gridiron star (Jack Carson) once – perhaps still – fancied by Turner’s wife (Olivia de Havilland), and the academic tussle that threatens the professor’s tenure. This Hollywood version of the Broadway smash co-written by James Thurber stays close to its source – the film’s director is the stage hit’s other writer and star Elliott Nugent.

**Please be aware that this is a manufactured on demand disc that was created using a DVD-R disc. It should play in all standard DVD players.

    Comments about this product:

This movie covers the question of whether speech on a college campus should be censored. This subject was discussed in the 1940s and still applies today with liberals limiting speech rather than conservatives shown in the movie. Oh, how the sides have changed, but the same controversy remains...Besides the underlying story, the subplots are entertaining and fun to watch. Joan Leslie brought a smile to my face with her performance, and is endearing as ever. I would watch this movie just for her if the plot was less significant in today's world.
