His fangs are bared, his hackles raised, his gin bottle nearly empty. The Male Animal is out of his lair, storming battle-of-the-sexes-bulwarks, skewering college athletics and speaking his mind when folks of narrower hat size seek to stop him. Henry Fonda plays bookish Prof. Tommy Turner, struggling to get in touch with his man-of-action side during the weekend of the big football game, the arrival of an ex-gridiron star (Jack Carson) once – perhaps still – fancied by Turner’s wife (Olivia de Havilland), and the academic tussle that threatens the professor’s tenure. This Hollywood version of the Broadway smash co-written by James Thurber stays close to its source – the film’s director is the stage hit’s other writer and star Elliott Nugent.

    Comments about this product:

This comedy stars Henry Fonda and Olivia DeHavilland as husband and wife. He works as a college professor. It is homecoming.

The college newspaper reports Henry is going to read some controversial literature in is class. Eugene Pallette is going to fire him if he does. Olivia says to forget this piece.

Their college ex-football star friend, Jack Carson, now a business man shows up without his wife and flirts with Olivia. This makes Henry jealous.

Henry goes on drunken binge! What a laugh. He tries to fight Jack. He gets Olivia crying. Everything is nuts.

The next day, Henry is so hung-over. Jack is hanging around again and Olivia is still crying. He almost misses his class. Then finds out his classroom got moved to the school auditorium.

Eugene delivers his final warning. Henry goes out on stage. He reads the piece. It was written by an executed man from his prison cell in broken English. It was a charming piece of Americanism. The class was so quiet.

After Henry exits the auditorium, the student body picks him and carries him along. Does Henry get fired? Does Jack finally go home? Will Olivia make-up?

I invite you to figure out the end.
