Inspired by the life of Paul Gauguin, W. Somerset Maugham's novel of the same name is adapted in this film that follows the story of a London stockbroker who decides to follow his dream of becoming an artist. George Sanders plays Charles Strickland, who gives up a proper English life that includes his family, friends and career to pick up and move to the island paradise of Tahiti in order to pursue his artistic inclinations.
