Comments about this product:
Van Johnson shows up at Thomas Mitchell's home just after the Civil War. Thomas is suspicious of the stranger, is Van blue or gray? Anyhow, Thomas's family gives Van dinner and a bed for the night.
The next morning, the family finds Van busy repairing the barn. Next, Van is busy harvesting the hay. He tells Thomas it is going to storm. Thomas tells Van, "Are you crazy? This is beautiful weather!" Before, you know it they are running like scared rabbits around the farm to get the hay into the barn.
Another day, Van convinces the village store keeper to hold a dance so neighbors can get back together. First maybe to drop they their prejudices between blue or gray. Second, to stop being so frightened of the mysterious barn burners.
Meanwhile, Van falls in love with Thomas's daughter, Janet Leigh. Van sets up a school, so Thomas's son Dean Stockwell and other children can have an education come autumn.
There lots of other scenes to the movie. Thomas is so stubbornly Confederate, he will bite his own nose off than to admit to being wrong about his neighbors and Van.
Anyhow, at the end of the movie, Van reveals his secret to Thomas. His eldest son, will not be coming home and the promise he made to his best army buddy. It really shows how deeply divided one nation was in views back then.
I invite you to view how pretty Janet Leigh was in her first movie. How well she performed for not being an actress.
I am a very hard cookie in giving out 5 stars. Maybe I should reconsider. I give this movie 4.5 stars. Only "Gone With The Wind" and other super greats get a five stars with me.
