Description
For their fourth onscreen outing together, Katharine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy moved away from the screwball comedy and delivered incredibly heart-felt performances in this western drama directed by the great Elia Kazan. The two cinematic icons star as a newly married man and wife struggling to keep their union together on Tracy's vast New Mexico cattle ranch. Their already rocky relationship goes through increasingly hard times as Tracy tries to rule both his headstrong wife and his beloved land with an iron fist, only to find Hepburn driven into the arms of another by his ruthless nature.

    Comments about this product:

This is 1946 Western/Drama/Romance. Hidden message is ecology. Land use for climate and conditions. High altitude and arid conditions, only a special type of grass grows naturally.

I prefer my DVD description, so I will copy it for you below. I think the plot and story will help you.

It's 15 miles to the nearest neighbor. And the sound that drifts in the night is from windswept New Mexico Territory grasslands. St. Louis society belle Lutie Cameron steps into a different world when she arrives in Salt Fork to begin her life as the wife of cattle baron Jim Brewton. But Lutie is sure love can make it all worthwhile.

Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn star, and Elia Kazan directs [this movie], an American pastoral of love and consequences based on Conrad Richer's novel and set in a West divided by ranchers and homesteaders. The Brewtons are also divided when Lutie sides with the plight of the farmers. Known for playing couples right for each other, Tracy and Hepburn here portrays marrieds perhaps very wrong for each other. The results, as always with these two as well as costars Robert Walker and Melvyn Douglas are fascinating to watch.

Below is my review of the movie. I understood both characters. Jim understands the land and works hard to keep it. Lutie is desperately lonely! Even Jim is always busy.

Lutie is desperate for a white women to talk to about things that bore men. Such topics are: clothing styles, pregnancy woes, child rearing problems, household hints, husband training, and entertaining friends. Lutie met a nice farmer's wife on the train, She begs Jim to let them homestead near their ranch so she can visit. But, Jim failed to give an order to keep cattle off farmland. Lutie loses her best friend while giving birth to their first child, a daughter.

Crushed, Lutie begs for a vacation, she goes to Denver, CO. She encounters Melvyn Douglas of Salt Fork, NM. They have a momentarily indiscreet romance. The result is Robert Walker's birth. Then the couple decide to split, her hidden guilt is the force.

Meanwhile, Edgar Buchanan gave a nice performance. His responsibility was cook for family and ranch hands. But he always found time for baby care. He really raised these children.

Lutie couldn't stay away. She visited her children once after many years. They were strangers and they resented having to spend an hour with her. Heart break again for Lutie.

Secretly, Lutie has been corresponding with Melvyn and the town doctor for news about her children.

Robert Walker grows up and has become the town wild kid, gambling, fighting and even prostitutes avoid him because they don't want his business. Lutie makes another visit, her daughter is very much a westerner growing up without one woman to associate with in a masculine world.

You have got to see the end of this story. It is very poignant. I highly invite to watch this movie. It is a tragedy worth Shakespeare.

One last word, farmers on the western plains of NE, KS, OK, please replant in prairie grass before the wells goes dry from irrigation. Even at 30,000 feet, one can see that you are overusing water! Even MN, "the land of 10,000 lakes" is going dry. Try ranching, no fences per field except property boundaries and households. Just supplement cattle diet with rich crops like corn, hay or rapeseed. You do not want cactus and sagebrush, plus going broke. Don't overstock, veal is tastier than beef.

      Comments about this product:

This film best fits into the "Oldie but Goodie" category. In Black & White...and don't think I would like to see it in color. Quality was excellent for an older film. So happy I purchased it; I'm sure I will watch it often.

        Comments about this product:

I got very involved in this movie. It takes twists and turns that are unexpected. The ending is a surprise but worth the wait. I could watch it over and over....and I have. One of Tracy-Hepburn's better movies.
