Description
In post-World War II Germany, a small boy who survived Auschwitz wanders alone feral, mute and terrified. He finds a makeshift home with a big-hearted GI, while the mother he does not remember searches desperately for him. Starring a then-unknown Montgomery Clift in his movie debut, directed in a near-documentary style by Fred Zinnemann and filmed in the ragged, rubble-strewn skeleton of Nuremberg, The Search vividly captures the horrifying human cost of war. This milestone of filmmaking won two 1948 Academy Awards®: Best Motion Picture Story and a special award to Ivan Jandl for his haunting performance as the lost child.

This is a great film on many levels. A mother who doesn't give up, a GI who is still caring after the war, a child learning to move forward after losing everything in WWII. And the ending always makes me cry. One of my favorite war movies because it humanizes that theme.

Shows realistic Germany after the war. I wasn't born then but it is an eye opener. We forget about the children and how they were affected. In 1970 I had the opportunity to live in Germany for 5 yrs. and the cloud of doom still hangs.

Not a dry eye in the house

I just watched The Search on TCM's 31 days of Oscars and will purchase the DVD to have in my WWII collection. This film vividly portrays the devastation on the cities after the war and the plight of the refugee children. Good script, good acting and a realistic story.
