Description
A stunning list of stars brings this tale of religion, power, politics and intrigue to dazzling life. Based on Morris L. West's bestseller, "The Shoes of the Fisherman" (1968) sees Anthony Quinn take on the role of Pope Kiril Lakota, a freed political prisoner and the first Supreme Pontiff from a communist country. He soon learns that trying to feed the starving, and spread peace in a nuclear age, is not an easy thing to do. Laurence Olivier, Oskar Werner, John Gielgud, David Janssen, Leo McKern and Barbara Jefford all appear in this Academy Award-nominated feature.

        Comments about this product:

Good family entertainment. The concept of the Church liquidating its treasures in order to provide food and services to the starving, even in Communist China is highly inspiring and the world would be a better place if people thought that way. Unfotunately, it is not realistic and not likely to occur.

          Comments about this product:

This movie came out in the late 60s, yet many of the problems we see today and the humanity that is expressed within, are still very relevant to today. How Popes are elected is very educational. That the church might trade its worldly goods to relieve a famine is very much food for thought for any generation. It makes you think, that is for sure, on what is truly important in life. And it shows the value and reward of tolerance.

            Comments about this product:

I wanted to see this film for years, and finally saw it. It's not as "epic" as other 60's films ("Doctor Zhivago" etc.) and seems to try too hard to be big. It is still a good looking film with worthwhile characters.
