Hedy Lamarr is not so much strange as irresistibly sexy in this sensuous saga, based on the book by Ben Ames Williams. A beauty, played by Lamarr, manages to seduce men of all ages and relations in this period romance, including those played by Gene Lockhart and Louis Hayward, even if it means betraying her friend, played by Hillary Brooke. Always entertaining, and more erotic than one might expect given when it was made, "The Strange Woman" (1946) is one of B-movie director Edgar G. Ulmer's big-budget pictures.
