Description
A pretty schoolgirl is murdered. An ambitious prosecutor wants publicity. And an outsider - a Northern teacher in a sleepy Southern town - makes a handy defendant, someone the locals will happily convict, innocent or guilty. Based on the infamous Leo Frank case, They Won't Forget is an explosive, acclaimed indictment of bigotry that's rich in deceptive motives, sudden violence and courtroom suspense. The talent is as powerful as the story: Mervyn LeRoy (I Am A Fugitive From A Chain Gang) produced and directed with steady hand and crackling pacing, Robert Rossen (The Hustler) co-wrote the unflinching script, Claude Rains (Casablanca) etches a portrait of the ruthless prosecutor with poison and guile, and in her first credited role, Lana Turner makes the schoolgirl beguiling prey for an unhinged mind.

    Comments about this product:

Of the major Hollywood studios, Warner Brothers most often tackled subjects of social relevance in the 1930s. And this film is, along with others like I Am a Fugitive from a Chain Gang (1932), one of their finest achievements. But it is largely lost to modern audiences and film historians who may never have heard of it. It deserves to gain wider attention, for in essence it's great cinema.

The movie is the disturbing account of a Northern man living in the South, who is unjustly convicted of the murder of a 13-year-old girl (the first speaking role of 16-year-old Lana Turner). It ends with his tragic, savage lynching by a mob in 1915. The story had been previously filmed in 1915. In 1986 it was determined after re-investigation that this northerer had been innocent, and he was officially exonerated of the crime. And in 1988 Orion Pictures released a solid TV mini-series of the story, The Murder of Mary Phagan, starring Jack Lemmon. Although the remake squarely covers the salient issue of Jewish prejudice and discrimination--which They Won't Forget sidesteps--the 1935 movie packs a greater punch with notable direction by Mervyn LeRoy (I Am a Fugitive...) and an able cast headed by Claude Rains. This is a little-known movie classic of social commentary that today's film buffs would do well to familiarize themselves with.
