Description
As nervy as it is hilarious, this screwball masterpiece from Ernst Lubitsch (Trouble in Paradise) stars Jack Benny (The Jack Benny Program) and, in her final screen appearance, Carole Lombard (My Man Godfrey) as husband-and-wife thespians in Nazi-occupied Warsaw who become caught up in a dangerous spy plot. To Be or Not to Be is a Hollywood film of the boldest black humor, which went into production soon after the U.S. entered World War II. Lubitsch manages to brilliantly balance political satire, romance, slapstick, and urgent wartime suspense in a comic high-wire act that has never been equaled.

      Comments about this product:

This is a classic by anyone's standard. Taking place in Poland during the occupation of Germany during WWII, who could envision a comedy? Leave it to the acting troupe that includes Carole Lombard and Jack Benny to create a side splitting farce under the most austere of situations. I recommend this movie to absolutely everyone.

        Comments about this product:

Jack Benny and Carol Lombard are superb, their timing is impeccable. This original version is so much better than the Mel Brooks remake, despite me being a huge Brooks fan.

          Comments about this product:

This is one of the greatest comedy's of its time, especially during one of the darkest periods of the world history (Hitler's invasion of Poland). Jack Benny and Carole Lombard are extraordinarily funny in their roles, but what makes the comedy even more enjoyable and interesting is the supporting cast members. Who would think you could find humor in the takeover of Poland and the destruction of a whole country and its people. The movie does not dismiss the horrific acts of the Nazis, but it does bring out a lighter side during a very disturbing and brutal time in history. Lubitsch is a master screen writer.

            Comments about this product:

Bought this as a gift for my 17 yr old grandniece who loves Jack Benny. She started listening to old radio programs 10 years ago, loves the Jack Benny Show. Asked me about his movies. I bought this and Charlie's Aunt for her for Christmas. She will be thrilled. It's nice to see the younger generation value the work done in the 30's, 40's, and 50's.
