A new headmaster takes on the old-school system of bullying in "Tom Brown's School Days" (1940), an adaptation of Thomas Hughes' classic novel. Jimmy Lydon plays the title role, a boy whose early days at Ruby are marked by sadistic upperclassmen until Sir Cedric Hardwicke's progressive educator makes some changes. This lighthearted account of England's Rugby boarding serves as an "inspirational teacher" film for the Victorian era. Fun fact: the athletic bully Flashman, played by Billy Halop, became the antihero in a series of comedic history novels.
