This 1927 silent adaptation of "Uncle Tom's Cabin" tells Harriet Beecher Stowe's acclaimed abolitionist tale of a black family torn apart when their gentle patriarch (James B. Lowe) is sold to a vicious plantation owner just before the Civil War. This isthe last of the silent adaptations of the most-filmed story of the silent age, and it is historically notable for trying to appeal sympathetically to both sides on an issue that was for many in the day still ambiguous. With the exception of Uncle Tom himself, slaves were played by light-skinned, mixed race actors and white actors in blackface so as to appease the studio's worries of alienating white audiences - specifically those in the South. Context aside, the movie contains strong performances in thisfilm that both educates and entertains.
