This 2001 television mini-series is based on the true story of the Jewish Fighting Organization, a brave band of Polish guerrilla freedom fighters defending themselves against World War II's Nazi regime. Led by Hank Azaria as schoolteacher Mordechai Anielewicz, the organization staged a valiant uprising as the people remaining in the Warsaw Jewish ghetto were being decimated and shipped to the Treblinka death camp. Although unsuccessful in stopping the Nazis, the organization managed to inflict much damage on the enemy and rescued hundreds of Polish Jews from the gas ovens and crematoriums. Much of the story is based upon the eyewitness testimony of surviving freedom fighter Simha 'Kazik' Rotem, portrayed in the film by Stephen Moyer. Other stars in thisemotional, stirring tale include Leelee Sobieski, Hank Azaria, David Schwimmer, Jon Voight, Donald Sutherland, and Cary Elwes.
