Giovanna Mezzogiorno delivers a bravura performance as a woman swept aside by history, in "Devil in the Flesh" (1969), director Marco Bellocchio's operatic drama that charts the rise of Italian dictator Benito Mussolini. Filippo Timi plays Mussolini, a socialist newspaper editor when he and Mezzogiorno begin an affair. As his ambitions grow and he turns to fascism, Mussolini denies thier relationship and even denies their son. A heartbroken Mezzogiorno is institutionalized when she continues to press hercause. Footage of the real Mussolini underlines the actual history behind the tale, while a lush score heightens the melodrama.
