Pas de Deux: Making White Nights
Ballet legend Mikhail Baryshnikov dances up a storm with tap icon Gregory Hines in "White Nights" (1985). Baryshnikov plays Nikolai, a famous Russian dancer who defected to the States but involuntarily returns to his homeland when his plane is forced to land at a base behind the Iron Curtain. The Soviets are desperate to convert him, so he is sent to meet with Raymond (Hines), an African-American expatriate and tap dancer who left home after getting fed up with racism and falling in love with his Russian born wife (Isabella Rosselini). Over clashing styles and clashing ideologies, an unexpected friendship is forged.
