Don't Bother To Knock (1952)

This taut psychological thriller, British director Roy Ward Baker’s first American film, benefits by the offbeat casting of Marilyn Monroe as Nell Forbes, an emotionally disturbed woman hired to babysit at a hotel. Richard Widmark is a hotel guest, an airline pilot whose chance encounter with Nell leads to a desperate fight to save a child's life. Told in real time and set entirely in the hotel, the classic film noir co-stars Lurene Tuttle, Jim Backus, and Anne Bancroft in her film debut. 76 min. BW/Rtg: NR

The Miracle Worker (1962)

This starkly photographed, inspiring drama tells the remarkable story of deaf, blind, and mute Helen Keller in 1880s Alabama and how she learned to communicate through the efforts of teacher Anne Sullivan. Patty Duke and Anne Bancroft both won Oscars for their respective performances as Keller and Sullivan; Arthur Penn directs this first screen adaptation of screenwriter William Gibson's acclaimed 1959 teleplay. Co-stars Victor Jory, Inga Swenson, and Andrew Prine. 106 min. BW/Rtg: NR

The Pumpkin Eater (1964)

Harold Pinter scripted this powerful drama based on the novel by Penelope Mortimer. Anne Bancroft is Jo Armitage, the mother of several children from three marriages. Jo goes through a series of emotional problems and must confront her feelings toward motherhood, sex, and fidelity while also facing the fact that current husband Jake (Peter Finch) is having an affair with another woman. James Mason, Janine Gray, and Richard Johnson also star. 118 min. BW/Rtg: NR

The Graduate (1967)

College degree in hand and clueless as to his next move, suburban kid Benjamin Braddock (Dustin Hoffman) finds himself drawn into an illicit affair by older, glamorous family friend Mrs. Robinson (Anne Bancroft). Their casual liaison might have dire consequences, as Benjamin then develops feelings for her daughter, Elaine (Katharine Ross). Mike Nichols’ telling, generation-informing coming-of-age comedy from Charles Webb’s novel co-stars William Daniels and Murray Hamilton, and features a classic score from Simon and Garfunkel. 106 min. C/Rtg: PG

Fatso (1980)

Dom DeLuise delivers a wonderful performance as Dominick DiNapoli, a good-natured, albeit overweight, guy who tries to reduce after an obese relative's death. As Dom struggles with giving up the foods he loves so much, he joins a support group called the Chubby Checkers, and finds love with a local antique shop owner (Candice Azzara). Funny and touching seriocomedy co-stars Anne Bancroft (who also wrote and directed), Ron Carey, Michael Lombard. 93 min. C/Rtg: PG

To Be Or Not To Be (1983)

Teaming together for the first time on film, real-life husband and wife Mel Brooks and Anne Bancroft star in this riotous remake of the 1942 comedy. During the Nazi occupation of Poland during World War II, renowned Shakespearian actors Frederick (Brooks) and Anna Bronski (Bancroft) get caught up with the Polish Resistance as they concoct a plan to escape to freedom. Tim Matheson, Charles Durning, Jose Ferrer, Christopher Lloyd co-star. 107 min. C/Rtg: PG

Agnes Of God (1985)

The body of an infant is found in a convent, and a disturbed young nun, who claims the child was from God, is charged with murder. Dramatic film version of the hit Broadway play stars Jane Fonda as a court psychiatrist trying to solve the mystery, Anne Bancroft as the headstrong Mother Superior and Meg Tilly as the withdrawn Agnes. 98 min. C/Rtg: PG-13

84 Charing Cross Road (1987)

In the aftermath of World War II, New York copywriter Anne Bancroft and British bookstore clerk Anthony Hopkins strike up a mutually rewarding and ongoing correspondence after Bancroft sends a request for used volumes to Hopkins' London shop. This endearing, true-life drama traces their 20-year friendship forged through the exchange of letters. Based on the acclaimed play; Judi Dench, Mercedes Ruehl co-star. 100 min. C/Rtg: PG
