In the late ‘50s, British widow Florence Green (Emily Mortimer) moved to a coastal Suffolk village and converted a disused building into a bookstore. The emergent cultural center, however, didn’t sit well with some corners of the community--and set up a war of wills with local gentry Violet Gamart (Patricia Clarkson), who had her own designs on the property. Isabel Coixet’s affecting adaptation of the Penelope Clarkson novel also stars Bill Nighy, Honor Kneafsey, Reg Wilson; Julie Christie narrates. 113 min. Widescreen; Soundtrack: English.
