A semi-autobiographical tale of aimless youth by Italian director Federico Fellini, "I Vitelloni" (1953) follows the lives of five men who pass the time drinking, chasing women, pulling pranks and delaying adult responsibilities in the quiet seaside townof Rimini. Franco Fabrizi, Alberto Sordi, Franco Interlenghi, Riccardo Fellini, Leopoldo Trieste and Achille Majeroni fill out this cast of slackers. Of them, it is only Interlenghi who truly breaks free to find his purpose and meaning. The film won a Silver Lion at the Venice Film Festival and received an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay. This Criterion Collection DVD includes a documentary featuring interviews with late actor Leopoldo Trieste, the original trailer and newsreels fromthe time of the film's release among other materials.
