In 1987 director Gillian Lynne collaborated with composer Carl Davis for a long-awaited special project that was to embrace several artistic mediums. "A Simple Man" was the result. A ballet based on the paintings of W.S. Lowery, an artist who captured hisnative gritty industrial northern England, this production uses dance movements and styles to depict situations and images in Lowery's life and paintings. The Northern Ballet persuaded veterans Moira Shearer and Christopher Gable to come out of retirement and lead them in this performance. Bonus features include a fascinating fifty-minute retrospective with Gillian Lynne and Carl Davis and an introduction to Lowery and his work by Albert Finney. Formatted in 16:9.
