An earth-shattering cast and ground-breaking sound effects provide the fuel for this 1974 disaster epic about a Los Angeles earthquake. Charleton Heston as the adulterous architect, Graff, attempts to rescue his spoiled but estranged wife, played by Ava Gardner. Lost in the fray is Graff's mistress, Denise, portrayed by Genvieve Bujold. Numerous other shaken Angelenos try to pick up the pieces after the quake, including a daredevil, a psycho store manager and a hot-headed cop. The accompanying seat-shaking, rumbling sound effect, Sensurround, won the film a 1975 Academy Award for Best Sound. The Universal DVD features an all-new digitally re-mastered picture and 5.1 Surround Sound.
