On a dare, two Arkansas backwoods teens (Tye Sheridan, Jacob Lofland) explore a boat mired on an island in the middle of the Mississippi...and find it occupied by a mysterious loner (Matthew McConaughey) answering to "Mud." While intrigued by the colorful eccentric's tales of sacrifice on behalf of his true love (Reese Witherspoon), the boys soon learn to their peril that the stories aren't all fantasy.
