Jigsaw

This aptly titled film noir masterpiece features a tightly woven plot and appearances by top-billed Hollywood stars Marlene Dietrich, Burgess Meredith, Henry Fonda, and John Garfield. The story unfolds with an investigation into the death of a print shop owner. Though the district attorney is convinced it was a suicide, the assistant D.A., Howard Malloy (Franchot Tone), suspects murder. Furthermore, he believes the man's death is connected to the Crusaders, a shadowy political organization whose members are mysteriously dropping like flies. His suspicions are confirmed when a reporter who'd written a series of damaging articles about the group is found murdered. Meanwhile, realizing how close Malloy is getting to the truth, the Crusaders send beautiful Barbara Whitfield (Jean Wallace) to compromise the meddling attorney. Barbara soon has a change of heart but is killed before she can confess. After this third murder, Malloy is even more determined to break the case and expose the Crusaders.

The Lady Confesses

Larry Craig (Hugh Beaumont) is preparing to take his second plunge into marriage when his first wife, Norma Craig (Barbara Slater), who has been missing and presumed dead for the past seven years, suddenly shows up very much alive. Larry and his fiancée, Vicki McGuire (Mary Beth Hughes), pay Norma a visit to see if she'll agree to a divorce, but they're met by the police who tell them that Norma is dead—she's been strangled. Craig is the prime murder suspect, but he swears he has an alibi—he was passed out drunk in the dressing room of a nightclub singer who was letting him sleep it off. Several eye-witnesses back up his claim, but if Larry didn't kill Norma, who had the motive? As characters scramble to cast off suspicion, the plot thickens and another murder is committed—but this time, the killer is someone else.

The Lady in Scarlet

Reginald Denny stars as Oliver Keith, a lawyer whose romantic feelings for his secretary Ella Carey (Patricia Farr) are put on hold when he becomes embroiled in the murder mystery of an old friend's husband. The victim is Albert Sayre (John T. Murray), a wealthy antiques dealer who was known for being possessive of his young wife Julia (Dorothy Revier)—going so far as to have her spied on by a private investigator. Oliver comes to Julia's defense and digs up plenty of dirt in his investigation, including a tangled web of extortion, corruption, pilfered bonds, and an unexpected connection to a second unsolved murder.

The Mandarin Mystery

Skilled sleuth Ellery Queen (Eddie Quillan) is on the perplexing case of the Chinese Mandarin, a stolen stamp worth fifty thousand dollars that goes missing in New York after Josephine Temple (Charlotte Henry) travels there to sell it to collector Dr. Alexander Kirk (George Irving). Not long after her arrival in the Big Apple, Josephine discovers that the valuable stamp is gone. In a search for the missing artifact, a dead body is discovered in the locked library adjacent to Kirk's room. Queen investigates and uncovers a counterfeiting scam, but before he can unravel the case, he becomes the target of a would-be thief. Then, just as Ellery thinks he's got it all figured out, Kirk's niece is found mysteriously murdered in another locked room. Can Queen crack this convoluted case of thievery and double homicide?
