Rory O'Shea (James McAvoy) is a young man afflicted with muscular dystrophy who goes to live at a home for the disabled where he befriends Michael (Steven Robertson), a cerebral palsy patient whose speech is nearly indecipherable. Refusing to let hiscondition hold him back, Rory, who is the only person who can somehow understand Michael, concocts a plan that will grant him his freedom by allowing him to serve as Michael's interpreter when he applies for independent living.
