The sword swirling "The Son of Monte Cristo" (1940) does battle against a 19th Century Balkan dictator, in what many view to be a statement against 20th Century fascism. Louis Hayward is the titular hero who, though masquerading as a wealthy fop by day, takes up arms at night. George Sanders steps into the shoes of the villainous leader, and Joan Bennett, Clayton Moor and Ralph Byrd round out the cast in this adventure from producer Edward Small.
